The Honorable Chief Justice of the Sri Lanka Supreme Court Priyasath Dep: Sri Lanka’s Legal History & Constitutional Development

The recently sworn in Chief Justice of Sri Lanka will discuss the legal history and constitutional development of Sri Lanka. A young island nation that is home to 21 million people from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, its legal system are shaped by pre-independence imperialist governing bodies that include Dutch, the Portuguese, and English law in addition to its own local customs based on the native population. Prior to joining the Supreme Court, the Honorable Dep  served the Attorney General’s (AG) Department of Sri Lanka for more than 33 years, including acting as the Head of both Civil and Criminal Divisions, and as an Attorney General on many occasions.
